Use Forkmate in ChatGPT

ChatGPT can add your own MCP server as an app once Developer mode is on. Do that once and ChatGPT can log your meals to a Forkmate diary you can open anywhere.

Step one: copy Forkmate’s server URL
https://mcp.forkmate.ai/

Then paste it into ChatGPT (steps below). No API key: you sign in once. Open chatgpt.com/plugins

No Forkmate account yet? Create one free first. It takes under a minute, and ChatGPT sends you there on first connect anyway.

Example: in ChatGPT, with Forkmate connected

I had two eggs and toast for breakfast.

Logged to Forkmate229 kcal
Egg, whole, cooked, hard-boiled · 2 large eggs (100 g)Bread, white · 1 slice (28 g)

Logged. Want me to total today so far?

Set up Forkmate in ChatGPT

  1. Turn on Developer modeIn ChatGPT on the web, open Settings → Security and login and turn on Developer mode. On Business, Enterprise and Edu an admin may need to allow it first.
  2. Add a custom MCP serverGo to chatgpt.com/plugins, select +, then Add custom MCP server. Name it Forkmate and under Connection paste https://mcp.forkmate.ai/. Choose OAuth if it asks how to sign in, select I understand and want to continue, then Create as a plugin.
  3. Sign in to Forkmate onceChatGPT opens a Forkmate sign-in in your browser. Sign in (or create your free account) and approve access. That one-time OAuth step connects it to your diary and nobody else’s.
  4. Pick Forkmate in a chatStart a new chat, type @ in the message box and pick Forkmate.
  5. Give your OK onceThe first time you log, Forkmate asks once for your OK to store your food diary. Agree the way it asks, in the chat or through the link it gives you to agree on the web, then log the meal again if it wasn’t saved.
  6. Log your first mealIn that chat, say “I had two eggs and toast for breakfast.” It logs the meal with calories and macros to your Forkmate diary.

What you need

  • A free Forkmate account (sign up). There is no paid plan.
  • OpenAI lists Developer mode for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts, on the web only. Free and Go are not on that list.
  • Forkmate needs write actions to log a meal. OpenAI’s help centre has described write access differently by plan, so check what yours allows. ChatGPT asks you to confirm each write by default.
  • If your plan can’t add a custom app that writes, Claude’s Free plan includes one custom connector.

Checked against these sources: OpenAI: Developer mode, OpenAI: connect a server to ChatGPT, OpenAI help: Developer mode and MCP apps. ChatGPT changes its menus often; if yours looks different, trust what it shows.

What to say first

Talk to ChatGPT the way you’d tell a friend:

  • “I had two eggs and toast for breakfast.”
  • “How many calories have I had today?”
  • “Make the toast two slices.”
  • “What did I eat this week?”

It logs the meal with calories, protein, carbs and fat to your diary at app.forkmate.ai.

In the Forkmate app

Settings › Your assistants has the same ChatGPT steps. Once ChatGPT is connected it is listed there with when it last used Forkmate, what it can do, and a Disconnect button.

Forkmate's Settings, Connect another: the ChatGPT steps, Developer mode on, add Forkmate at chatgpt.com/plugins, and the plans that can add it
Forkmate's Settings, Your assistants: Claude and ChatGPT connected, each with a Last used line, what it can do, and a Disconnect button

Good to know in ChatGPT

  • Picking Forkmate applies to one message. @mention it again when a follow-up needs to log or look something up.
  • ChatGPT’s agent mode doesn’t use custom apps, so log meals in a normal chat.
  • OpenAI’s help page says full MCP (with writes, which logging needs) is for Business and Enterprise/Edu, and that Pro connects with read and fetch permissions. Check what your plan allows.

If something goes wrong in ChatGPT

Forkmate’s tools look out of date, or a call fails after an update
Open the app at chatgpt.com/plugins, choose Refresh, then start a new chat.

Forkmate shortcuts

Forkmate comes with ready-made requests for the everyday jobs: log a meal, fix the last entry, see what’s left today, log your usual, hit your protein, a weekly check-in. We haven’t found MCP shortcuts (prompts) in ChatGPT’s menus or documentation, so type or paste the request instead.

  • Log a meal (log-meal)
“Log this to my Forkmate diary: two eggs and toast with butter”
  • Fix my last entry (fix-last-entry)
“Fix the last thing I logged in Forkmate: it was 2 eggs, not 3”
  • What's left today (today-so-far)
“Show me today so far in Forkmate: my calories, protein, carbs and fat.”
  • Log my usual (log-my-usual)
“Log my usual breakfast to Forkmate.”
  • Hit my protein today (hit-protein)
“How much protein have I had today in Forkmate, and how far am I from my target of 120 g? Suggest a few foods for my remaining meals and snacks that would close the gap, using my food profile and the foods I usually eat.”
  • Weekly check-in (week-review)
“Give me a check-in on my last 7 days in Forkmate (get_range): calories, protein, carbs and fat per day and on average, how many days I logged, and the foods I ate most.”
  • Move my MyFitnessPal history (import-myfitnesspal)
“How do I move my food diary history from MyFitnessPal to Forkmate? Walk me through exporting my data for free and importing it with the guided importer described at https://forkmate.ai/migrate-from-myfitnesspal/. Don't log anything yet.”

Shortcut or not, Forkmate sends ChatGPT the same logging rules when it connects: log your own words, keep your amounts, and look foods up before estimating.

Fueling for a run or ride

Forkmate doesn’t sync with Strava or Garmin. Describe the session and ChatGPT reads your food from Forkmate:

  • Help me fuel for a PR on my local route. It usually takes me about 50 minutes, with a few short climbs. Read my Forkmate diary for the last week, then give me a before, during and after plan. Ask me what you need first.
  • How have I been eating, and how should I fuel for a 10K? Read the last 14 days of my Forkmate diary. I run about four times a week and my 10K is in three weeks. Ask me anything else you need.
  • What should I eat before, during and after my long ride? It's about 3 hours at a moderate pace. Read what I've eaten the last three days in Forkmate, and ask me what you need first.
