Frequently asked questions

What Forkmate is, what works today, and how it's different — the honest answers to what people (and their AI assistants) ask most.

Can I log food with Claude or ChatGPT?

Yes — Forkmate is a remote MCP server, so any MCP-capable AI assistant can log your meals. Claude (Claude.ai, Claude Desktop, and Claude Code) and Cursor support remote MCP servers today, so you connect Forkmate once and then just tell your assistant what you ate. ChatGPT's support for third-party MCP connectors is still rolling out and varies by plan — if your ChatGPT can add a custom MCP connector, Forkmate works there too.

What AI clients work with Forkmate?

Any client that can connect to a remote MCP server over OAuth. That includes Claude (web, desktop, and Claude Code) and Cursor today, plus any other MCP-capable assistant. Forkmate is deliberately client-agnostic — you log from the AI you already use instead of being locked into one company's app. See the Connect page for step-by-step setup.

Is Forkmate free?

Yes — all of it, with no credit card. Create an account and log meals from your AI assistant or the web, see your calories and macros in the diary, and keep your complete history. Food search, barcode scanning, chain-restaurant menus, unlimited entries, and free data export are all included, with no ads.

Is there a limit on how much history I can see?

No. Your diary shows your complete history — every day you've logged. Everything you log, and anything you import, is kept and stays yours to export for free at any time.

How is Forkmate different from MyFitnessPal?

MyFitnessPal makes you tap through its app to search a database or scan a barcode, and paywalls a lot of the basics. Forkmate flips that: you log in plain language from the AI assistant you already use, and you confirm every number before it's saved. It's built for active people — training sync (Strava and Garmin) is on the roadmap so your targets adjust around how you train — and your data is yours, with free export and no ads.

Do you import my MyFitnessPal history?

Yes. A frictionless one-file import — drop your whole MyFitnessPal export in and we unlock it right in your browser — is in final review and coming soon. Today, you bring your history over with your AI assistant: export your data with MyFitnessPal's free “Download My Data” option, then have your connected assistant read the export and replay the rows into your diary through our import prompt (it logs them one row at a time). And if you already have a food_diary.csv — from MyFitnessPal Premium's CSV export, or one your assistant extracted from your export — you can upload it directly in Forkmate's guided importer (open your diary and choose “Import from MyFitnessPal”). Either way your calories and macros come over exactly as you logged them — we don't re-estimate your history. See the Switch from MyFitnessPal guide for the full walkthrough.

Do you sell my data?

No. We never sell your personal data and we never use your health-related data for advertising. Your food diary is yours — you can export it for free or delete it at any time from your account settings. We share data only with the service providers that help us run Forkmate (such as our auth and hosting providers), under contract and solely to operate the service. See our Privacy Policy for the full list.

Where do Forkmate's nutrition numbers come from?

Forkmate resolves foods against open, public databases — USDA FoodData Central and Open Food Facts — not a black-box proprietary database. When you log a meal, you see and confirm the calories and macros before they're saved, so you're always in control of your own numbers.

How accurate is the calorie and macro tracking?

Honestly? No food tracker is pinpoint accurate, and Forkmate is no exception — food databases, portion sizes, and even lab measurements all carry real margins of error. Our take: most people quit tracking because it's tedious, so logging consistently and easily matters far more than chasing perfect numbers. Good-enough numbers you actually log beat perfect numbers you abandon. If you do need pinpoint accuracy — for clinical or medical reasons — we encourage you to weigh and measure your food and log it precisely in the web diary. Forkmate is a general-wellness tool, not medical advice; always consult your physician for medical or clinical nutrition decisions.

Is Forkmate medical or nutritional advice?

No. Forkmate is a tracking tool, not a medical device, healthcare provider, or source of medical or nutritional advice. Calorie and macro estimates are for general informational purposes only and may be inaccurate. Consult a qualified professional before making dietary, health, or medical decisions.
